thrift stores are my happy place
I absolutely love shopping, especially in thrift stores. You walk in with zero expectations and never know what you are going to come across. About 98% of my clothes are from Goodwill, aka my home away from home. I could and have spent hours in one store, and have dedicated entire days to visiting every Goodwill that was within a 15-mile radius.
Thrifting is definitely fun and a wonderful way to look good as well as save money. In order to reap the benefits that thrift stores have to offer, you need to have patience. It will be very difficult to find all of the amazing finds if you only look through one isle then head out after 10 minutes of searching.
Time to head out to the store with some tips
I am going to share my tips about how to get the most out of a trip to Goodwill (or whatever thrift store you shop at) while spending as little money as possible. You will also see what I bought while thrifting, how I will style it, and how much I spent on each item.
Tip #1: Shop for out of season clothes. It is the best time to prep future outfits at an insanely low price.
Tip #2: Goodwill has weekly color sales. Check for the color tags that are on sale! These tags are typically about 50% off!
Tip #3: Search as much of the store as possible. People grab items and then leave those items on other racks. You also never know that new items for your home you could find, or the perfect oversized cozy tee that you find in the men’s section.
Tip #4: If you’re like me then you hate the sound of the metal hangers dragging against the metal pole that they hang on. I recommend bringing some headphones and listening to music or a podcast while you shop!
Item #1: Old Navy Boyfriend top
The first item that I found at the store is an oversized light pink top from Old Navy. The shirt is originally $20 and I was able to snag it for just $4! It’s super soft and a beautiful pink and I can already tell it will be one of those pieces that I will wear ALL OF THE TIME. It could be paired with some distressed denim, sleek black leggings, or an old pair of pajama pants that are 8 years old.
Item #2 Express Top
I absolutely love this green shirt from Express that I found. Looking at this shirt at first glance, it didn’t seem like something that I really needed but then I took a look at the back… OMG, I needed it! The top has a low drop back with a knot at the bottom. I don’t own a top anything like this and I knew that I needed to add it to my closet. After spending some time on google, I found that I had snagged a $40 top for only $4! I plan on pairing this top with a pair of dark wash denim jeans, or black jeans.
Item #3 Old Navy Cardigan
Two of the tips that I have helped me land what is probably my new favorite cardigan. It is a long oatmeal cardigan from Old Navy that was originally $27 that I bought for the price of $2! Right now, thrift stores are full of out of season clothes. Which means that right now is time to buy for the future. Goodwill also has a deal of the week that changes weekly. When I went to Goodwill, they had 50% off of all items that had a blue tag, and lucky for me the cardigan did! This cardigan will be paired with a solid color top or my favorite leopard print top, and either some light washed jeans or black leggings.
Item #4 SHEIN Dress
I don’t have many dresses so I have been searching Goodwill for something comfortable to wear while spending the hot summer in a classroom and out on the playground. Most dresses that I end up buying aren’t the most flattering so I was a little hesitant purchasing another. After I tried this dress on, I have to say that I finally have a dress that fits perfectly! This dress is from SHEIN was originally $20 and I bought it for only $5! When wearing this dress, I will most likely wear a sleek pair of black flats.
I am thrifting all of the time and when I do I post about my wonderful findings! Make sure to follow me on Instagram @happy_caffeinated to see what other treasures I find while thrifting!
